What foil colours can I choose?
Four: silver, gold, colour and holographic. Silver and gold are the classic metallics, colour foil brings a bright non-metallic sheen, and holographic gives a rainbow, light-catching effect. Plenty of printers only offer silver and gold, so the colour and holographic options are where these cards stand out.
How do I set up my artwork for the foil?
Supply one PDF with three pages. Page 1 is the front of your card, page 2 is the back, and page 3 is your foil layer. On page 3, fill every area you want foiled with 100% K, which is solid black made of cyan 0, magenta 0, yellow 0, black 100, in exactly the same size and position as it appears on your front artwork so the two line up. That black is only a marker, it does not print as ink, it tells us where to press the foil. Foil is applied to the front of the card only, so mark front elements. If you are not sure how to build that page, send your artwork anyway and we will help.
What does the foil work best on?
Bold, solid elements. A logo, large text, or a clean shape foils crisply and looks sharp. Very fine lines, small text and thin detail do not hold the foil as well, so we keep it to the parts of your design that are meant to stand out. Happy to advise on your specific artwork before we run it.
Foil or raised Spot UV, which should I choose?
Both are raised accents on the same velvet card, so it comes down to the finish. Foil is metallic and reflective, in silver, gold, colour or holographic, a bright hit that catches the light. Raised Spot UV is a clear, raised gloss in your own artwork colours underneath, a subtler shine. Choose foil for metallic impact, or look at our raised Spot UV cards for an understated gloss.
Can I collect my cards from your South Perth shop?
Yes. We manage and proof every job from our South Perth shop, so you are welcome to collect from there once your order is ready, or we can deliver.
What stock are these printed on?
450gsm, velvet laminated both sides. It is a thick, substantial card with a soft-touch matte surface, which is the base the foil is pressed onto.
How long do foil cards take?
Estimated production time: 5-7 business days. The clock starts once you have approved your final artwork, not when you place the order. Foil is a specialty finish, which is why it runs a little longer than a standard card.
What sizes and corner options can I choose?
Two sizes: the standard 89 x 54mm rectangle, or a 65 x 65mm square. On the rectangle you can choose square or rounded (5mm) corners. The square comes with rounded corners.
Can I have different artwork on the front and back?
Yes. Every card is printed full colour on both sides, so the front and back can be completely different. The foil itself is applied to the front only, and you mark where it goes on the third page of your PDF.
What file do you need, and can you design it for me?
A print-ready PDF in CMYK with the three pages described above, front, back, and your 100% K foil layer, is ideal. Not set up for print, or not sure how to build the foil layer? Send whatever you have and our team will sort it, or our Design Studio can create the whole artwork, foil layer included. Either way, a real person checks it before we print.
